Basmati Rice Export: Grades, Ageing and Container Logistics
Basmati is India\'s flagship agricultural export โ and one of the most specification-sensitive commodities you can buy. Get the grade, ageing and packing right, and your market will love you; miss them, and claims follow.
The grades that matter
- 1121 Steam: the longest grain (8.3 mm+ average), the export workhorse. Extra-long, fluffy, high elongation โ preferred in GCC, USA, UK and Europe.
- 1509 (Pusa 1509): aromatic, medium-long, softer texture โ strong demand in Middle East retail.
- 1401: traditional premium aroma, shorter grain than 1121 โ favoured in specialty and gourmet segments.
- Traditional basmati (Taraori, Dehraduni): the connoisseur grades for premium retail.
Processing styles
- White (raw): milled raw paddy โ fastest cooking, lightest flavour profile.
- Steam: steamed before milling โ better yield retention, firmer grain, the export standard.
- Sella (parboiled): parboiled in husk โ highest mineral retention, ideal for reheating and foodservice.
- Golden sella: parboiled with colour retention โ a specialty segment.
Ageing: the hidden specification
Basmati improves with age: aged rice is drier, elongates more and cooks fluffier. Standard export ageing is 12โ24 months (old crop). The age is often stated in the contract โ specify "aged 18 months+" if your market demands it, and verify by moisture and cooking tests, not just paperwork.
Container capacities
- 20\\\' FCL: approx. 24.5โ25 MT (25/50 kg bags, non-palletised) or 21โ22 MT palletised (20 pallets ร 1 MT).
- 40\\\' HQ: approx. 25โ26.5 MT palletised (20โ22 MT safe for 1 MT pallets) โ plan palletised loads around 20โ22 MT to avoid overweight.
- Packing: 5/10/20/25/50 kg PP or jute bags; 1 MT jumbo bags; 5โ10 kg retail pouches with handles.
Quality parameters to contract
Average grain length, moisture (max 12.5%), broken (max 2% for premium, 5% for standard), foreign matter (max 0.5%), damaged/discoloured (max 1%), chalkiness, and pesticide residue compliance for your destination (EU MRLs are the strictest).
